Supporting your nutrition while taking a GLP-1
Individualized nutrition support for changing appetite, nutrition needs, and health goals.
Your appetite may change. Your need for nourishment doesn’t.
GLP-1 medications can change appetite, hunger, fullness, digestion, and the way you experience food. But everyone's experience is different, and so are the reasons someone may choose to take a GLP-1 medication.
Whether you're taking a GLP-1 for diabetes, PCOS, insulin resistance, cardiometabolic health, weight management, or another medical reason, nutrition support should be individualized to your health, your goals, and your relationship with food.
At Olive Branch Nutrition, we'll look beyond the medication itself to help you navigate eating in a way that supports your physical health without unnecessary rules, shame, or restriction.
People take GLP-1 medications for many reasons. Your experience may include changes in appetite or eating patterns, improvements in blood sugar, complicated feelings about weight changes, relief from constant thoughts about food, or a combination of many things.
You don't have to fit into one particular story to deserve thoughtful, individualized nutrition care.
Our work together can focus on what matters most to you, without assuming that weight loss is your only (or even primary) goal.
Your experience with a GLP-1 is personal
Navigating appetite changes without slipping into restriction
GLP-1 medications can significantly reduce appetite, change hunger cues, and even lessen our enjoyment of food. For some people, this can make eating regularly more difficult or lead to unintentionally skipping meals and not getting enough of the nutrients your body needs.
Nutrition counseling can help you navigate these changes while still supporting adequate nourishment.
Together, we may explore:
Eating enough even when hunger cues are reduced
Maintaining regular meals and snacks
Getting the nutrients your body needs to stay nourished
Managing nausea, constipation, reflux, or other GI symptoms
Maintaining energy and supporting muscle health
Recognizing when "healthy eating" starts becoming overly restrictive
Navigating fear around eating more than your appetite suggests
Maintaining flexibility and enjoyment around food
For some people, changes in appetite can feel freeing. For others, they can make an already complicated relationship with food or body image more complicated. This can be especially true for people with a current or past eating disorder, disordered eating, or a history of dieting or food rules.
A GLP-1 medication may interact with existing patterns of restriction, food rules, binge eating, body checking, or anxiety around eating. Sometimes reduced hunger can make it harder to recognize when your body needs nourishment. For others, changes in weight or appetite may bring up complicated emotions or reinforce old beliefs about food and body size.
Nutrition counseling can provide a space to talk honestly about these experiences without judgment or assumptions. My approach considers both your physical health and your relationship with food, so we can work together to stay nourished while navigating changes in appetite and eating patterns.
If concerns about restriction or eating disorder symptoms arise, we’ll address them thoughtfully and collaboratively while keeping your overall health and well-being at the center of care. If you have a history of restrictive eating or concerns about how the medication may be affecting your relationship with food, you can also learn more about my approach to eating disorder and disordered eating nutrition counseling.
My approach is also weight-inclusive, meaning your care can support the health goals that matter to you, including weight-related goals, while looking beyond the number on the scale to consider your overall health, nutrition, and well-being.
